Tory minister Philip Lee resigns ahead of Brexit vote

"But if the Lords amendments are allowed to stand, that negotiating position will be undermined".

May urged her party yesterday to back her in key Brexit votes and defeat House of Lords proposals to amend her European Union withdrawal legislation.

"But the message we send to the country through our votes this week is important".

"This isn't about narrow party politics", she told BBC Radio 4's Today programme.

Another would give Parliament the power to approve or deny the Brexit withdrawal agreement and transitional measures, preferably before the European Parliament debates and votes on it. Within that period, the government would have to make a statement on its plans.

Senior pro-EU Conservative lawmaker Dominic Grieve tabled his own competing amendment which could force ministers to hand over control of its Brexit strategy to parliament if there is no deal by mid-February.

There are two amendments that could prove particularly tough for the government to overturn.

UK PM Theresa May is expected to urge Tory "Remainers" to put aside personal misgivings about the EU Withdrawal Bill, and deliver on the decision made by the British people in accordance with their duty "to deliver on Brexit".

"We are asking members of parliament to abide by the referendum result, our manifesto commitment and to back our country", Andrew Bridgen, Conservative lawmaker and Brexit campaigner, told Reuters.

May did not immediately address Lee's resignation.

Other amendments from the Lords to be debated Tuesday include transferring the EU's Charter of Fundamental Rights into United Kingdom law and one forcing the government to negotiate to remain in the European Economic Area (EEA) like Norway.

If May is defeated in the House of Commons it will be yet another blow to a prime minister whose authority has been challenged several times since last year's election. She had nearly lost a general election she never needed to call, squandering her Conservative Party's overall majority and forcing her to rely on the support of the smaller Democratic Unionist Party.

Despite depending on the votes of the 10 DUP MPs for her precarious Commons majority, there were signs of cautious optimism among ministers that they would get the numbers to see off the revolt. "And I imagine that there will be (more)".
