Sacramento's Korean community hopes for peace from US-North Korea summit

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is denying claims the that USA lacks the technical expertise to denuclearize North Korea. "The US position remains clear and unchanged".

The Monday report from the Korean Central News Agency mentioned the summit agenda, including denuclearization and lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula.

There was a sweet ending to the working lunch: an early birthday cake for Trump. As it happens, the North Korean and the American share a tendency to act unpredictably on the world stage.

Scott Snyder, a U.S. -Korea policy specialist at the Council on Foreign Relations, told CNBC earlier on Monday that the summit is " essentially the normalization of Kim Jong Un and North Korea on the global stage".

On Monday morning, North Koreans woke up to the news that Kim had arrived in Singapore for the "historic" tête-à-tête. "We've got very interesting meeting in particular tomorrow, and I just think it's going to work out very nicely". And the abrupt change in schedule came shortly after U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo had seemed to lower expectations for the meeting, which Trump had earlier predicted could potentially yield an on-the-spot end to the Korean War.

North Korean state journalists have also traveled to Singapore this week to capture their leader's meetings and movements.

He said his perception of Kim - a "bad guy with nuclear weapons" - had improved considerably following his two meetings with South Korean President Moon Jae-in at the border truce village of Panmunjom.

Pompeo's remarks suggest that the United States is looking for a short transition toward denuclearisation, according to Zhang Baohui, director of the Centre for Asian Pacific Studies at Lingnan University in Hong Kong. Around seven-in-ten Americans (71%) said the USA should take North Korea's nuclear threats "very seriously".

One analyst told Al Jazeera Trump will seek to promote his image as a deal-maker. Trump's self-proclaimed negotiating skills formed the basis of his public persona even before it became the core of his political identity, when he was elected promising that he alone could fix the nation's ills. He sees the summit not as a means to an end, but the end itself. "And we have been able, so far anyway, to provide that confidence".

The Tanglin neighbourhood surrounding the Shangri-La Hotel and the entire resort island of Sentosa will be locked down as "special event" areas with security measures such as road closures and spot checks.

Trump, after the first-ever meeting between USA and North Korean leaders, had been scheduled to fly back to Washington on Wednesday morning after spending Tuesday with Kim in Singapore.

Singapore's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement that Mr Kim and Mr Lee discussed relations between their countries, as well as developments in North Korea and the region, including recent positive developments on the Korean peninsula.
