NBA coach of the year Casey picked as Pistons coach

The team finished with a 59-23 record, which gave Casey a 320-238 record and made him the franchise's winningest coach.

Dwane Casey has agreed on a five-year deal to become the coach of the Pistons, according to ESPN.

Detroit has missed the playoffs in eight of the last nine seasons. His departure from Toronto was a hard decision for Raptors president Masai Ujiri, and Casey being favored for a new role quickly is hardly surprising, although he could have stayed at home earning $6.5 million and waiting for another opportunity next summer.

"In our meetings he displayed great insight into what this roster can accomplish, and great passion about our city and the team's role in bringing people together", Gores said.

Detroit parted ways with Stan Van Gundy - as both coach and president of basketball operations - around the same time that Casey was let go by Toronto. "He embodies our culture and will be a great representative for our franchise". Casey also coached the Timberwolves from 2005-07, where he amassed a 53-69 record.

Casey, who is from Morganfield, Kentucky, played for the Wildcats and helped them win the 1978 NCAA title and began his coaching career the next year as a graduate assistant under Joe B. Hall.

He also spent three seasons (2008-11) as an assistant with Dallas under Rick Carlisle where he directed the club's defense and helped lead the Mavericks to the 2011 NBA Championship.

The Pistons recently hired the former Nets general manager Ed Stefanski to lead their search for new front-office executives.

However, Toronto fell for the third straight season to LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers.
