Kim Jong Un goes for surprise nighttime walk ahead of summit

Again accusing the longtime U.S. ally of unfair trade practices, Trump added: "Then Justin acts hurt when called out!"

"The senior officials of the party and government sincerely wished Kim Jong Un good successes in the first summit meeting and talks between the DPRK and the USA and his safe return", the KCNA said.

Kim can expect things like hand-cut crystal chandeliers, hand-painted chinoiserie silk wallpapers, 600-threadcount bed linens, paintings by Marc Chagall, a baby grand piano, separate living and dining rooms, an office, gym, and, of course, the hotel's renowned (among rich people) butler service.

More than 2,500 journalists are in Singapore to cover the event.

The meeting on Tuesday between the United States president and North Korea's leader, unthinkable until recent months and uncertain until June 1, is a high-stakes and politically risky venture into summit diplomacy by two unpredictable personalities who have famously exchanged personal insults and threats of war.

"I feel that Kim Jong Un wants to do something great for his people", Trump said at a press conference in Canada before departing the G-7 summit for Singapore.

Hours before his meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, Trump took to Twitter to blast those criticising the summit.

Trump is expected to arrive at 8pm local time (2200 AEST) and go straight to his hotel, the Shangri-La, the White House said.

There's excitement surrounding the summit but also skepticism that the North will relinquish a nuclear weapons program it spent decades building despite crushing sanctions.

The White House announced Monday that Trump would leave Singapore Tuesday night after meeting with Kim, adding that talks between US and North Korean officials "are ongoing and have moved more quickly than expected".

Trump earlier defended his decision to meet with Kim, tweeting that North Korea has already released three detainees and that missile tests have halted.

Ahead of the inter-Korean talks, Mr Kim suddenly showed up in Beijing for a state visit - his first overseas trip since taking office.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has arrived at Singapore's Sentosa Island, where he'll be meeting shortly face-to-face with President Donald Trump. In some instances, past deals struck by previous USA administrations with North Korea paused - but failed to roll back - North Korea's program, which has only grown over the years.

Kim spent the day out of view, but was reportedly going on an evening tour of attractions on the city's waterfront, a source familiar with the plan told Reuters. In that first meeting they were joined only by translators, a break from standard practice of having at least one aide present for high-stakes huddles.

News of the Trump-Kim summit also covered the front page of the ruling party's newspaper.

North Korea once enjoyed two sponsors, China and the Soviet Union.
