JUST IN: Real Madrid appoint new coach, Julen Lopetegui

The club have been linked with several names since Zidane's departure with the likes of Guti, Arsene Wenger and Mauricio Pochettino all talked about.

Real Madrid CF announces that Julen Lopetegui will coach the first team for the next three seasons.

However, they have now chose to appoint Lopetegui, who signed a new two-year extension with the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) last month.

The Champions League winners had been without a boss since Zinedine Zidane revealed that he was stepping down from his role last month, but the Spanish giants have acted quickly to secure the Frenchman's replacement.

Lopetegui will take the reigns after coaching Spain in the World Cup, with the 51-year-old agreeing a three-year deal with the La Liga side. They also scored 36 goals, and their form means they are one of the favourites ahead of the tournament in Russian Federation.

The timing is also unexpected as Spain kick off their World Cup campaign on Friday when they take on Portugal at the Fisht Olympic Stadium in Sochi, Russia.

Lopetegui had a brief stint at Real during his playing career and coached their B team in 2008.

"Julen Lopetegui will be the Real Madrid coach after the celebration of the 2018 World Cup", the club's statement said.

He previously managed Porto and the Spanish underage teams.

Lopetegui, 51, was hired by Spain following their underwhelming Euro 2016 campaign and the former Porto boss has helped re-establish La Roja as genuine contenders this summer in Russian Federation.
