School uses lullaby to teach kids about lockdown drills

The nursery rhyme, written in large, colourful letters, appears to follow the same tune as the lullaby Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star, but tells the children what to do in the event of a school shooting.

Cohen wrote on Twitter that her daughter has already been doing lockdown drills in her pre-k classes.

But the point drove home a little too closely for two parents who saw a lockdown poem hanging in a kindergarten teacher's classroom at Arthur D. Healey School in MA during a tour. The picture has been retweeted over 38,000 times and drawn thousands more comments.

One child's parent, Georgy Cohen, first spotted the song on the wall on a tour of the school. Now it's time to have some fun!'

In a haunting twitter post, the mother of a soon-to-be kindergarten student posted a rhyme that had been taped up in their child's classroom telling children to hide and be quiet.

"It's jarring", Cohen told the Globe in a telephone interview Thursday. The image instantly resonated on social media and brings a new voice to the Second Amendment debate.

But in a statement Somerville Public Schools said lockdown drills are a sad necessity, adding that "unfortunately this is the world we live in". "I'm always wondering if her school is going to be next, if a school near me is going to be next".

Kindergarten-aged children are learning the alphabet, numbers, colours - and a nursery rhyme with instructions to survive school shootings in the United States.

"To be shocked by it is important. To see that absurdity and horror and have that sick feeling in your stomach is important", Cohen said.

There have been more than 20 school shootings this year alone.

They agreed with Cohen's initial assessment of the circumstances, calling the need for lockdowns "jarring" for students, educators, and families.

"Lockdown drills are necessary in this country because until stronger gun reform laws are enacted and the plague of gun violence eradicated, there must be systems in place to keep our schools and students safe", he said.
