Sons of Anarchy actor Alan O'Neill dead at 47

Alan O'Neill is not the first Sons of Anarchy star in recent years to have passed away at a young age.

O'Neill's most well-known role was as Hugh on Sons of Anarchy, initially a member of the fun-running True IRA who has a falling out with the organization. An autopsy is now pending.

His body was discovered by his partner in in the hallway of her Los Angeles home on Wednesday night.

Alan made his acting debut in the 1997 TV movie Ballyseedy and went on to have roles in 1989 drama Fair City and the 2001 series Rebel Heart, where he played Keith McGrath. Following Sons of Anarchy, O'Neill had a minor role in the 2016 film Urge, which starred Pierce Brosnan and Danny Masterson.

An autopsy will be carried out but his death is not being treated as suspicious according to TMZ.

Several stars took to social media to pay tribute to Alan.

The Irish-born actor was 47, TMZ says.

U.S. actress Kristen Renton, who played Ima Tite, said: "RIP sir... my you find peace now". So very sorry to hear of your passing.

Fans of O'Neill's work have also been taking to Twitter in reaction to the news of his passing, with one hailing his on-screen bromance with Mick Nolan's Ray as "Fair City's greatest bromance".

"Always enjoyed working with him. May he rest in peace".
