Notley Uses Scathing Tweet To Announce She'll Skip Premiers Meetings

The pipeline saga took another turn on Tuesday with the B.C. government suing Alberta for its recently-enacted legislation which would restrict energy exports to B.C.

Eby questioned why Alberta would take the time draft a law knowing that B.C. would challenge it, instead of referring the matter to a provincial or federal judge, as his government did.

It comes weeks after the B.C. government asked its highest court to decide if it has the right to limit the flow of bitumen in the Trans Mountain pipeline.

Justin Trudeau continues to insist the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion "will get built", as Kinder Morgan's May 31 deadline nears.

"It would be surreal and exceptionally tone deaf for anyone to think we could politely discuss pharmacare and cannabis when one of the players is hard at work trying to choke the economic lifeblood of the province and the country", the Alberta premier wrote. But the text of Bill 12, enacted last week by the Alberta legislature, made no mention of B.C.

Notley said she wasn't surprised by B.C.'s legal action in a news conference Tuesday afternoon.

The B.C. NDP government does agree with the Alberta NDP government on one point - cutting off shipments of oil, natural gas and refined fuels would indeed serve to punish this province.

Conservative MP Shannon Stubbs, who represents Lakeland in northeast Alberta, will introduce the bill to the House of Commons within the next two days, Cousineau said. "Nonetheless, what I would suggest is it's probably premature, although we appreciate them sharing their arguments with us in advance".

The dispute over Kinder Morgan's (KMI, OTCPK:KMLGF) Trans Mountain pipeline still loomed large at today's Western Premiers Conference in Yellowknife, NWT, as Alberta's representatives did not sign the communique out of the meeting because it did not include a statement of shared support of the pipeline.

"A significant disruption in the supply of gasoline, diesel, and crude oil from Alberta to British Columbia would cause British Columbia irreparable harm", the document asserts.

Morneau has already unveiled the third option: leaving original project architect Kinder Morgan to handle construction, but covering any cost overruns incurred as a result of political interference.

In filing the claim, Eby said it came about after "we repeatedly called on Alberta not to move forward with blatantly unconstitutional legislation".
