Nipah virus claims one more life, Death toll rises to 11

Director of Health Services Dr R L Sarita said the blood and body fluid samples from all suspected patients have been sent to Manipal Institute of Virus Research. Kozhikode resident V Moosa, 61, succumbed to the infection days after the his two sons and sister-in-law died. So far, the confirmed cases of Nipah Virus infection have been reported only from Kerala.

Although the number of patients coming for treatment with symptoms of Nipah virus infection has gone down, Kozhikode Collector U.V. Jose has banned till May 31 all public meetings and even training courses, including tuitions, to avoid assembly of people.

The Kerala Health Ministry on Tuesday said the outbreak of Nipah virus is contained now and there was no need for the residents to worry. Of the 22 results that came, 14 are positive.

India's national Health Minister, J. P. Nadda, wrote on Twitter on Wednesday that he had instructed officials, "to leave no stone unturned in terms of proactively countering the Nipah virus threat". Many have left their homes and have proceeded to kin's residences at distant locations as the Nipah fever have already claimed 11 lives in Kozhikode and adjoining Malappuram district. "A central health team has found several bats housed in that well from where a family living in the house was drawing water", a health official said. Two people have died in the neighboring district of Mallapuram.

"Things are under control". The symptoms are nearly identical to influenza, including fever and muscle ache and in some cases patients have brain inflammation as well.

"We have opened a control room and we are always on the alert and we are doing everything possible to keep things under check".

Currently, the disease has broken out in Kerala, a southern state in India, and 10 deaths have been caused by it to date, according to Time.

Transmission of Nipah virus takes place through direct contact with infected bats or from other NiV-infected people and people have been also cautioned that they should not consume fruits that have fallen on to the ground. Find us on Facebook too!
