Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline raises intelligence concerns say US

The planned Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline from Russian Federation to Germany raises USA intelligence and military concerns since it would allow Moscow to place new listening and monitoring technology in the Baltic Sea, a senior U.S. official said on Thursday (17 May).

The Minister of economy of Germany Peter Altmaier commented on criticism of the United States of gas pipeline Nord stream-2 and promised to consider Ukraine's interests during its construction.

"The US is looking for sales markets".

U.S. President Donald Trump is pressuring Germany to pull out of the controversial Nord Stream 2 natural gas pipeline project, a report said Thursday.

"US - our friends and partners, and we want to protect our shared values..."

Oudkirk noted that Russia in the past has turned off gas supplies to Ukraine during disputes and said Washington is concerned that the Baltic pipeline might create similar "vulnerabilities" by giving Russia similar leverage over Western European nations and increasing their dependence on Russian gas. "But if the United States put its economic interests above the interests of others, then they should expect the same from Europe", - said the German Minister. However, she added that Washington was focused on using diplomatic means to halt Nord Stream 2, one of several Russian projects to export gas to western Europe via routes avoiding Ukraine, with which Moscow is involved in a series of disputes.

The US threats to Nord Stream 2, which has split eastern and western European Union states, could impact companies in Austria, France, Germany and the Netherlands.

Altmaier has said he is optimistic that a "substantial" amount of gas will continue to flow through Ukraine when the Baltic pipeline starts operating.

2 Nord stream is a Russian gas pipeline, which is building the Nord Stream AG 2. The length of the pipeline will be 1.2 thousand km, and the total capacity of the existing Nord stream - 55 billion cubic meters of gas.
