Israeli air raids target Hamas facility in Gaza, Turkey seeks United Nations motion

Israeli air raids target Hamas facility in Gaza, Turkey seeks United Nations motion

On Monday morning, across Gaza, a tiny Mediterranean strip that has been suffocatingly blockaded by Israel and Egypt for years, loudspeakers urged Palestinians to rush to the border with Israel and protest.

Nikki Haley, U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, forcefully defended Israel in the violence at Gaza, potentially widening a rift between the U.S. and allies.

Putin and Erdogan also discussed the Syrian settlement and Russian-Turkish cooperation in the energy sector.

The largest demonstrations coincided with the move of the U.S. embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem on Monday, which saw Israeli forces kill some 60 Palestinians.

Violence along the border has been comparatively limited over the past two days, with no casualties reported by either side since Tuesday, when two Palestinians were killed while dozens of others were buried. Juxtaposed with the festive mood at the opening of the USA embassy, footage from Gaza, showing scores of Palestinians shot by Israeli soldiers, alarmed viewers around the world. It was a break with the U.N.'s decade-long stance that Jerusalem's final status must be decided in direct negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians, who seek eastern Jerusalem as a future capital of their own.

Israeli-Palestinian tensions have been on the rise since December, when US President Donald Trump announced the recognition of Jerusalem as the capital city of Israel, triggering furious protests violently suppressed by the IDF. While officials from Israel and the USA inaugurated the embassy with smiles on their faces, the Palestinians wept and cried for the deaths of their loved ones. The Israeli military, which has come under worldwide criticism for firing on unarmed protesters, said Hamas militants tried to carry out bombing and shooting attacks under the cover of the protests and released video of protesters ripping away parts of the barbed-wire border fence.

In Jerusalem, following the United States lead, Guatemala opened its embassy in the city on Wednesday.

"It's simply unacceptable and outrageous to use live fire, not as the last resort but as the basic modus operandi for dealing with these demonstrations", said Amir Gilutz, spokesman for Israeli human rights group B'tselem.

The ministry said in a written statement that it expressed discomfort to Deniz over alleged mistreatment during the departure from Turkey of Eitan Na'eh, Israel's ambassador to Ankara.

IDF released footage of a Hamas terrorist explaining how the group manipulated Palestinians in Gaza to rush the border with Israel.

"These individuals that were killed, regardless of their affiliation or membership, were engaged in a demonstration in which they did not pose an immediate threat to life and were gunned down, and that's what's relevant", Shakir said. Israel captured east Jerusalem in the 1967 Mideast war and later annexed it in a move not recognized internationally.

Still, Kuwait's envoy said he planned to propose a council resolution on protecting Palestinian civilians. It sees the entire city as its capital.
