In DR Congo identified 11 new cases of infection with Ebola

Bikoro. The health minister in DR Congo, Oly Ilunga, has confirmed 11 more cases of Ebola and one new death in Bikoro, in a new outbreak of this lethal infectious disease, Sputnik reports. The Thursday update to the May 16 epidemiologic report puts the total number of hemorrhagic fever cases at 45, of which 10 are suspected, 21 are probable and 14 are confirmed. The new death was reported in the town of Bikoro, the place of the first death, and has epidemiologic ties to another case.

The worldwide response to the current Congo outbreak has been substantial, and is expected to grow in size and urgency after the announcement of a confirmed urban case. Fourteen cases have been confirmed with laboratory tests.

The outbreak, publicly declared on May 8, had previously been reported in a rural area of Equateur that lies roughly 150 kilometres (93 miles) from Mbandaka.

"This is a major development in the outbreak", said Peter Salama, the WHO's deputy director-general of emergency preparedness and response. "WHO and our partners are taking decisive action to stop further spread of the virus". World Health Organization said it is deploying about 30 more experts to the city.

WHO-partner, MSF, has also deployed its teams and is working with United Nations agencies to strengthen health capacity to treat Ebola patients.

WHO Regional Director for Africa, Matshidiso Moeti, said in a statement: "The arrival of Ebola in an urban area is very concerning".

No details were given on the death's links to the newly confirmed case. It is paramount to trace the suspect case in order to have a clearer view on how it reached the city.

The WHO and the global group, Doctors Without Borders, are sending emergency response teams to contain the highly contagious disease. Teams are also setting up two Ebola Treatment Centres (ETCs) in Mbandaka and Bikoro, with 20 beds each.

The worst-ever Ebola outbreak started in December 2013 in southern Guinea before spreading to neighbouring west African countries Liberia and Sierra Leone, killing more than 11,300 people out of almost 29,000 registered cases. "And we are taking it very seriously", Dr. Ibrahima-Soce Fall, the World Health Organization regional emergency director for Africa, said Monday when two cases were suspected in Mbandaka and being kept in isolation.

The vaccine has been shown to be highly effective against Ebola.

"Five thousand four hundred doses of vaccine arrived from Geneva this morning" said health ministry spokeswoman Jessica Ilunga.

The UN agency has been working with the Ministry of Health and Doctors Without Borders to conduct the ring fence vaccinations across the affected areas - where contacts of those infected, followed by contacts of those contacts, would all be vaccinated.

"This vaccine is no longer experimental". The virus was initially transmitted to people from wild animals, including bats and monkeys.
