Belgium No2 Henry scheduled to interview for Arsenal job

Mikel Arteta is still the number one candidate to succeed Arsene Wenger, as Arsenal executives sit down with the Spaniard today to discuss his appointment. ESPN's Arsenal correspondent Mattias Karen feels Arsenal need to bring in several key defenders if the club is to challenge for sivlerware.

It's claimed that Guardiola is impressed with the way Arteta puts across his message to the players and their is a strong belief among City's backroom team that the 36-year-old is ready to take the job at Arsenal.

The north London side have also reached out to another former captain, Patrick Vieira, about the possibility of succeeding Arsene Wenger, who just stepped down after 22 years in charge of the team.

The former Gunners captain is part of Pep Guardiola's coaching staff at Manchester City and Arsenal have already sounded him out with further talks expected in the next 24 hours.

"He was a leader and he has a good passion for the game and he knows the club well".

In an interview with Bein Sports, Wenger said: "Overall he has the qualities but I don't want to influence that publicly".

Earlier this month, Wenger was asked if he had received offers from other English clubs, but said he did not want to comment on that yet.

"The question is do I still want to coach, to be on the bench, or is it time to take up different functions?"

"I have friends who can go and lay on a beach all day long for the whole of their holidays and I envy them", he said.

Wenger made clear that his support for Arteta, who played 162 times for the Gunners, should not be used to sway the decision of the Arsenal hierarchy, insisting that he will support whoever is chosen as his replacement.
