AUDIO: Highlights of Capitals-Lightning East Final Game 4

And with it, a series that could go the distance.

The Washington Capitals spent plenty of time on offense, but Andrei Vasilevskiy helped the Tampa Bay Lightning steal Game 4 with a 4-2 win.

But Backstrom's return wasn't enough as the Capitals suffered 4-2 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning.

"It's pretty freaky", said Steven Stamkos, who took a puck of the face during the morning skate, then went out and scored a power-play goal that gave Tampa Bay a 2-1 lead after the first period. In particular, the goalies came to play. Thanks to Vasilevskiy, though, the period ended with the game tied at two.

The 1995 series (New Jersey-Philadelphia) and the 2004 series (Calgary-San Jose) both had the road team win the first five games before the home team closed it out in Game 6. As the third period progressed, they slowly but surely rediscovered their game.

Following Killorn's goal, the Lightning held the Caps to just two shots for the rest of the game. As they did earlier in the series, the Caps attacked relentlessly off the rush and put the Lightning back on their heels.

Taking a cue from their coach, the Capitals' dressing room was an optimistic place after Game 4, despite a parade of frustrating squandered chances.

Backstrom wasn't limited Thursday after missing the last four games with a right hand injury.

The game started just the way that the Capitals had scripted it. The Lightning won 4-2. It marked the 12th time in 16 games this spring that the Capitals opened the scoring. Tyler Johnson noted, "I don't think we were the better team for 60 minutes tonight". It was Killorn who scored the game-winning goal just six seconds after Washington had killed a penalty midway through the third period.

"He's definitely a core part of this team, a tremendous leader, a guy you look up to and a guy you follow into battle", winger Tom Wilson said. Tampa Bay certainly has to play better than they did in Games 1 and 2 if they want to reverse the trend and take Game 5.

It was as if the Capitals had briefly forgotten what had given them success. But those looks were isolated - the Caps dominated play for the vast majority of the second period. In Game Three, he did make a number of important and hard saves, particularly when the Capitals were surging.

In total, Tampa Bay denied Washingtons nine shots on four power plays.

It wasn't quite that bad.

"We're not kidding ourselves, we knew we had a lot better than that second period", said Stamkos, dressed head to toe in blue. The Capitals had four power plays and they held the Lightning without a shot for 21 minutes and 55 seconds, from the second half of the first through to the second half of the second. Gourde one-timed a pass to Brayden Point at the left circle and Point whistled the puck into the net. He committed two costly penalties, which led to a Lightning power-play goal and another score six seconds after time on the kill had expired. Kuznetsov and Ovechkin are tied for the second most goals among playoff scorers with 10 each.

WASHINGTON-If the Washington Capitals hope, finally, to get their names engraved in Lord Stanley's Cup, they'll need to prove that they're special.

Based on the shot attempts, Washington should have had plenty more.

In the aftermath of game two of the Eastern Conference Finals, Andrei Vasilevskiy was a beaten goalie.

Fans watching were probably stunned that the Lightning were even in the game at that point.
