Theresa May confirms exit form customs union after Brexit

But the source, familiar with the discussions in London, said aligning Britain with European Union import tariffs for an extended period could be part of a backstop arrangement in the event of a delay in the implementation of any Brexit deal.

'Of course we will be negotiating future customs arrangements with the European Union and I have set three objectives, the Government has three objectives in those.

Her government was also struggling to arrive at a consensus on the government's options for future customs arrangements, the Japan Times report added.

The agreement could see Britain remain within the EU's common external tariff until a future customs arrangement is ready in a temporary fix created to avoid a massive jolt for business and a hard border in Northern Ireland.

The issue of the border between Northern Ireland and the Republic has emerged as the crunch point in talks with the EU.

The report added that EU's chief negotiator Michel Barnier said this week that "no significant progress" happened since the European Union leaders' last meeting in March end and cautioned that key issues must be resolved before the June summit. They want a deal by October so parliaments can ratify it.

Britain otherwise risks crashing out of the bloc, a scenario that could hurt the economy and disrupt people's lives.

"It is an absolute redline for us that there could not be a hard border on Ireland", Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar told reporters in Sofia. She remains concerned that their maximum facilitation solution option breaks a commitment not to have a hard border between Ireland and Northern Ireland.

Varadkar said: "If we're not making real, substantial progress by June then we seriously need to question whether we're going to have a withdrawal agreement at all".

The idea would be during that period when the United Kingdom would remain aligned with the Customs Union that the United Kingdom could start negotiating trade deals but not actually implementing them.

A detailed Brexit strategy dossier will be produced in the coming weeks, the British government said Wednesday, amid accusations that cabinet divisions are holding up negotiations with the EU.

From the other side, from the Irish and the EU, they will be looking closely at this and saying the backstop did not necessarily refer to a time limit it was meant to be a temporary measure and they will be wondering whether aligning with the Customs Union, which would align tariffs for a period of time is enough.

"But we need to see it written down in black and white and know that it is workable and legally operable".
