Tennis player smashes racket against umpire's chair in post-match tantrum

Tennis player smashes racket against umpire's chair in post-match tantrum

The usually stoic Czech disagreed with chair umpire Marta Mrozinska over a call when she put away an easy overhead at 5-5, deuce, in the third set.

Former world No 1 Karolina Pliskova was so irate with an umpire in Rome that she smashed the umpire's chair with her racquet several times - instead of shaking hands - after a stunning loss to Maria Sakkari. Pliskova tried to show the chair umpire where the ball had landed inbounds on the clay court, but the umpire acknowledged that she "lost" the ball mark and therefore said the point should be awarded to Sakkari.

After Pliskova embraced Sakkari at the net, she went to shake the chair umpire's hand before pulling it back and smashing her racket several times into the umpire's chair, clearly surprising Sakkari and leaving a massive crater in the chair.

The Czech went on to lose that game and the match 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 in two hours 21 minutes.

On social media some tennis fans think Pliskova should be suspended while others say that the umpire and line judge should face action.

No fine was announced and USA Today reported that the Women's Tennis Association had not responded to queries regarding the incident, but event organizers have been clamping down on tennis players for unsportsmanlike conduct.
