Sharif compares Afghanistan, Pakistan's narratives in the wake of isolation

The meeting of National Security Committee was held at Prime Minister's House in Islamabad on suggestion of Pakistan army.

Pakistan continues to await cooperation from India regarding the arrest of alleged Indian spy Kulbhushan Jadhav and the Samjhauta Express attack, the statement said.

"[The] NSC meeting suggested to [the] prime minister to discuss recent misleading media statement regarding Bombay incident".

"The participants observed that it was very unfortunate that the opinion arising out of either misconceptions or grievances was being presented in disregard of concrete facts and realities".

Following the meeting, Abbasi, who replaced Sharif as PM after the latter was disqualified rom holding public office, met the PML-N leader.

The comments - in which Sharif implied he was removed from office by the Supreme Court past year for trying to end military support for anti-India militants - led to uproar in Pakistan, where criticising the military is increasingly considered a "red line" that can not be crossed.

He added that this was categorically stated before the world community by the then prime minister Manmohan Singh and the UPA government, which had led to sanctions against Pakistan.

Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa, Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee General Zubair Mahmood Hayat, Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Zafar Mahmood Abbasi, Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Mujahid Anwar Khan, Director General ISI Lieutenant Generl Naveed Mukhtar and senior civil as well military officials attended the meeting. Samaa TV, however, claimed on its website to have run the presser.

Speaking to Dawn newspaper, Nawaz Sharif asked if we should allow non-state actors "to cross the border and kill 150 people in Mumbai".

Ten Lashkar-e-Taiba militants killed 166 people and wounded dozens in Mumbai in November, 2008. "Explain it to me", he had said, in a clear reference to the Mumbai killings blamed on 10 Pakistani terrorists. "Why can't we complete the trial?"

Mr Sharif is facing ire for "harming national interests" from opponents as well as some of the estranged leaders from his Pakistan Muslims League-Nawaz (PML-N) party for allegedly supporting the Indian narrative on the attack case.

Earlier today, Sharif dispelled the notion that the comments were falsely attributed to him, saying that he will speak the truth come what may.

"PML-N rejects all assertions, direct or implied, made in news report of Dawn", he tweeted.

On Monday, Sharif stuck to his guns, telling a political rally in the northern town of Buner that a commission should be formed to probe his statement.

"Will Prime Minister Modi show the courage of conviction and the 56-inch chest to ensure that action is taken against the perpetrators of 26/11, who are neither being adequately tried nor punished in Pakistan?"

Sharif's comments have put more pressure on the powerful military, which is also grappling with a growing grassroots movement out of the tribal region on the border with Afghanistan. We will strive to ensure timeliness and accuracy by relying on credible sources such as concerned, qualified authorities and our staff reporters.
