It's not over: What just happened with net neutrality?

It's not over: What just happened with net neutrality?

In what could represent a landmark moment, the US Senate has voted 52-47 to preserve net neutrality regulation introduced under Barack Obama, after the FCC repealed it last December. "A vote against this resolution will be a vote to protect large corporations and special interests, leaving the American public to pay the price". In January of this year, 22 attorneys general across the country commenced legal action against the FCC's decision. The legislation would also require the signature of Trump, who has criticized the net neutrality rules. Senator John Thune, a Republican from South Dakota, said the internet thrived long before the Obama administration stepped in with rules in 2015, and he predicted that when the FCC repeal is in place, consumers won't notice a change in their service. But the FCC's move has stirred fears among consumer advocates that cable and phone giants will be free to block access to services they don't like or set up "fast lanes" for preferred services - in turn, relegating everyone else to "slow lanes". The rules are officially expected to expire on 11 June of this year and with U.S. midterm elections approaching, lawmakers may be considering their position ahead of countrywide voting.

CNET, for example, showed exactly which Senators voted for and against the motion to retain net neutrality.

Markey said he expects to see more Republican members of the House come out in favor of net neutrality following the vote. House has to use the CRA to overturn the policy as well.

"Make no mistake - the abolition of net neutrality will erode the democratic fabric that binds the Internet together", said McGrath. They will face a tough fight in the House because many Republican reps support FCC's regulation.

"This is our chance, our best chance to make sure the internet stays accessible and affordable to all Americans", said Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, a Democrat from NY. "This put the FCC on the wrong side of history, the wrong side of the law, and the wrong side of the American people".

The regulations are strongly supported by liberals and online companies including Amazon, Netflix, Facebook and Google, and dozens of smaller Web-based companies. If an internet service provider which is owned by a conglomerate decides to absorb an exchange then without net neutrality they can charge users extra and or toggle down speeds to access exchanges in competition with their own. Democrats argue that net neutrality is necessary to keep the internet free and give all companies an equal playing field.

Additionally, a Nexis search for "net neutrality" produced zero results among the nation's top newspapers, including The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, the Los Angeles Times, the Chicago Tribune, the New York Post, and USA Today.
