Griezmann brace as Atleti win Europa League title

Australia's World Cup opponents France may have lost another key player after midfielder Dimitri Payet limped off injured in Marseille's 3-0 loss to Atletico Madrid in the Europa League final.

The scoreline mirrored the Spanish side's last Europa League final win over Athletic Bilbao in 2012 and cemented their status as one of the continent's most consistent teams since Argentine coach Diego Simeone transformed their fortunes.

Atletico's star man up front has been the subject to intense speculation all season that he will leave, with United and Barcelona linked.

And though the 27-year-old admits he wants to win more silverware, he wouldn't be drawn on where his future lies.

"We have been speaking about him all year".

Marseille (ranked 46th by UEFA preseason) were aiming to be the first Ligue 1 team to win any European trophy since Paris-Saint Germain won the 1995-96 Cup Winners' Cup. "I hope the stadium is bouncing on Sunday-he deserves the best send-off possible".

This game is a sort of homecoming for Griezmann, who has spent his whole club career in Spain but grew up in Macon, less than an hour's drive from Lyon. Maybe winning a first trophy alongside the teammates with whom he has suffered so much in the 2014 and 2016 Champions League finals might make him decide to stay.

Team Diego Simone scored three unanswered goals in the gate "Marseilles" and became the victor of the Europa League of the season 2017-2018.

"It's a great performance to have reached the final", Zidane said.

"Right now I would say that the Europa League is a load of s***, even though it has given me a lot", the captain said.

The dominance of Spanish team could be further underlined if Atletico's neighbors, Real Madrid, triumph against Liverpool in the final of the Champions League in Kiev on the 26th of May.

"Against all reason, for history", urged French sports daily L'Equipe, adding: "It would be an huge achievement, because nothing will be easy against Atletico".

Marseille fans vastly outnumbered Atletico's fans inside the Stade de Lyon, and made a nuisance of themselves throughout.
