Cannes Debuter 'Whitney' Gets A Stateside Trailer

Gary Houston, Whitney's elder brother, revealed to filmmaker Kevin Macdonald that the troubled singer's cousin, Dee Dee Warwick, allegedly sexually abused her as a child. Since then, several filmmakers have been clamoring to tell the story of her life, but only one film has been officially authorized by Houston's family.

"There were times when I looked up to God and I'd go, 'Why is this happening to me?'" the singer says in one scene, seemingly pondering her rise to superstardom and the downfalls of fame.

Ms Jones mentioned the singer by no means instructed her mum Cissy Houston in regards to the abuse as a result of she felt "ashamed".

Whitney was abused as a child, her family has claimed. Dee Dee is said to have struggled with narcotics addition and died in 2008, aged 63.

As the trailer hints, the docu is unflinching and uses previously unseen archival footage, demo recordings, rare performances, audio archives and interviews with friends and family who were there for Houston's ups and downs.

Whitney debuted at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival in a midnight screening on Wednesday and the first official US trailer just hit the web. The project was directed by the Scottish film-maker Kevin Macdonald and was fully supported by Whitney's estate. She seemed kind of asexual in a odd way.

The documentary features interviews with many of Houston's relatives and close acquaintances, two people made allegations against Warwick. "I've seen and done some filming with people who have suffered childhood sexual abuse, and there was just something about her manner that was reminiscent to me of that sort of shrinking". "She's this attractive woman but she's very closed in her demeanor".

"I first began to suspect that there might be some kind of abuse involved before anyone had actually told me", he tells the outlet.

The trailer touches on multiple hot-button issues that surrounded Houston, as a disembodied voice fires off questions about drug choice, addiction, her relationships with Bobby Brown and Robyn Crawford.

Whitney will be released in United Kingdom and U.S. cinemas on 6 July.

Representatives for Dionne Warwick didn't immediately return messages today.
