Senators Tell Donald Trump His Move to Help China's ZTE 'Disappointing'

What Trump did not mention, however, is that two days before his first tweet about ZTE, "a state-owned Chinese construction company called the Metallurgical Corporation of China announced it would float a $500 million loan to Indonesian developers to facilitate the construction of a vast "integrated lifestyle resort" called MNC Lido City that includes Trump-branded hotels, residences, and a golf course", as Vox puts it.

The company was caught illegally shipping telecommunications gear to Iran and North Korea, making false statements, and obstructing justice.

Bill Evanina, the director of the National Security and Counterintelligence Center, a federal counterspy agency, said in a Senate hearing Tuesday he would not recommend that anyone in government or the private sector use ZTE phones over electronic spying concerns.

Kudlow said the U.S.'s re-examination of sanctions against ZTE isn't meant to let the Chinese mobile phone-maker escape a penalty. It would reduce US gross domestic product by almost 3 billion dollars and destroy 134,000 American jobs annually, according to a new study recently released by the federation and the Consumer Technology Association.

USA security concerns about Chinese telecom equipment also were voiced by senior US intelligence leaders during congressional testimony earlier this year.

Small-business executive Mary Buchzeiger is a proud Republican who favors President Donald Trump's tough line on trade.

Larry Kudlow says he is optimistic that a trade war between the US and China can be prevented. Perhaps, he didn't realize that the trade war was going to hurt America's middle class as prices start to rise. In their letter on Tuesday, the Senate Democrats told Trump he shouldn't start out by cutting the Chinese government breaks related to ZTE. Oh, that cleared it up for us, thanks.

Earlier today (May 14), Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross told reporters that the United States might consider alternatives to banning ZTE from doing business with USA suppliers, though he didn't go into detail on what those options might be. Democratic leaders noted that ZTE's sanctions were due to security concerns, specifically the dealings with Iran and North Korea. Hint: It's probably less to do with the "Rocket Man" tweet and more do to with the collapse of their now radioactive testing facility. And so any ethics issues involving either Trump or the businesses putting money in his pocket necessarily disappear into a metaphysical black hole. "His own top counterintelligence official said ZTE threatens US national security", Wyden said on Twitter. "Any telecomm firm in #China can be forced to act as tool of Chinese espionage without any court order or any other review process".

ZTE reached a settlement in March 2017 for violating US export laws and paid penalties totaling $1.19 billion. Captain Obvious hasn't joined in on the discussion, but many people are saying that he concurs with Lil' Marco here. It came as a shock for some, as Trump had crusaded against Chinese trade practices on the campaign trail and in office, and has pushed his administration to aggressively take on those practices.
