Robinson Cano Suspended from 80 Games for Drug Policy Violation

Robinson Cano Suspended from 80 Games for Drug Policy Violation

Cano tested positive for the diuretic Furosemide which can be used to mask the presence of performance-enhancing drugs. He can even lose his wage through the suspension, anticipated to be round $11 million. The Mariners have a legitimate shot at securing the second Wild Card spot and playing in the win-or-go-home game at the end of the season - a game for which Cano would be ineligible. Cano was reportedly offered a seven-year, $175 million contract to return to the Yankees, but turned it down in favor of the longer and more profitable contract in Seattle.

That substance was a diuretic called Furosemide (also known as Lasix), and using it is a violation of MLB's drug prevention and treatment program. Cano was trending toward becoming one of the few current players with a chance to reach 3,000 hits in his career and has been a consummate defensive standout.

"This Robinson Cano positive test should not surprise anybody in baseball", Conte said.

Cano released a statement saying he unkowingly took a medication that was banned and that the substance is not performance enhancing. Cano had not missed a game this season and had played in at least 150 games in 11 consecutive seasons. Furthermore, a source told ESPN that Cano's positive test occurred prior to the season at which point the veteran second baseman appealed.

Cano is under contract through the 2023 season, when he'll be nearly 41 years old, at $24 million each year, and if Seattle makes the playoffs this year he won't be eligible. In his five years with the Mariners, Cano has been a three-time All-Star with a.294 batting average, 101 home runs and 384 RBI. Now it is definitely worth reiterating once again that this is not a suspension for taking PEDs.

Cano added that he didn't understand the substance was banned: "For greater than fifteen years, enjoying skilled baseball has been the best honor and privilege of my life". Despite the lack of suspensions, the majority of BBWAA voters have looked at Bonds and Clemens as "steroid guys" and refused to vote for them. If I had a hall of fame vote, which I do not, I would not hold this against Cano.
