The Newest: Catalan candidate guarantees work for independence

Considered a radical hardline separatist, Torra was elected with a razor-thin majority when 66 of the delegates voting in his favour and 65 others cast their ballot against his candidacy.

Catalan separatist candidate Quim Torra was on Monday elected as the new leader of northeast Spain's Catalan region following the second investiture debate in 48 hours.

Following the vote, pro-independence lawmakers stood to sing the Catalan anthem.

Monday's election of the 55-year-old is expected to end six months of leadership vacuum, but Torra's pledges also place the restive northeastern Spanish region in a path for further confrontation with central authorities. - Crisis not over - Torra tried - and failed - to be appointed on Saturday at an initial parliamentary vote that required an absolute majority.

Puigdemont's rejection of his appointment by the Catalan parliament last week raises the chances that his nominated successor, political new-comer Quim Torra, will secure the role. Much like his predecessor Puigdemont, Torra is considered a pro-independence firebrand that is fully committed to forcing the wealthy region's population of nearly 8 million down the secessionist path.

"The Catalan republic is equality, liberty and fraternity".

Monday's session in the Catalan parliament marked the beginning of a new chapter for the region's politics, with Spanish Prime Minister, Mariano Rajoy, immediately calling a meeting for the next day with opposition PSOE leader, Pedro S?hez, to analyse how to proceed in the wake of recent events.

Mr Torra has been criticised by competitions for creating exactly what a few have predicted a inflammatory post from 2012, at which he explained some Catalans from Spanish-speaking wallpapers were "animals in human form that spew out hate".

In October 2017, the Parliament of Catalonia after the disputed referendum, declared independence from Spain, despite protests from the part of official Madrid.

Torra faces divisions within the separatist camp, composed of the CUP, the leftwing ERC party and Puigdemont's Together for Catalonia grouping, according to Antonio Barroso, deputy research director at Teneo Intelligence.

Torra has promised to draft a constitution for a future Catalan state.
