Sichuan Jet's Cockpit Window Breaks at 32000 Feet, Hurts Pilot

Sichuan Airlines Airbus A319 was forced to perform an extreme emergency landing in China after one of the cockpit's windshields shattered, almost sucking the co-pilot out of the plane at 32,000 feet.

Sichuan 3U8633 from Chongqing to Lhasa diverted to Chengdu.

Parts of the cockpit, including the autopilot control panel, flew off the dashboard. Within in 20 minutes at around 7:46am, the captain safely landed the plane at the airport.

Images posted on the official People's Daily newspaper online appear to show a cockpit window completely missing. Reports out of China suggest the co-pilot received scratches and a "waist sprain" but somehow avoided a more serious injury.

Twenty-seven passengers received medical checkups in a hospital in Chengdu, but no injuries were detected. He said he was thrown up in the air and fell during the incident.

Footage was published showing the broken window and equipment in the cockpit, as well as oxygen masks dangling from the ceiling of the cabin.

The airline later released a statement saying that the passengers had resumed their trip.

Incidents involving cracked windshields do happen on a regular basis due to occurrences such as bird or lightning strikes but ones involving entire windshields coming off are rare.
