Manhattan nanny Yoselyn Ortega gets life for murdering Kiddies

Calling the New York City nanny who stabbed a 2-year-old boy and a 6-year-old girl to death "pure evil", a judge sentenced Yoselyn Ortega on Monday to life in state prison, without the possibility of parole.

Yoselyn Ortega was sentenced to life in prison on two counts of first-degree murder and consecutive sentences of 25 years each on two counts of second-degree murder for fatally stabbing 6-year-old Lucia and 2-year-old Leo in their home on October 25, 2012.

Marina Krim, 41, found her children dead in the bathtub after rushing home in a panic with her third child Nessie when she learned Ortega had not taken Lucia to her dance class as planned.

Marina Krim told the judge that nanny Yoselyn Ortega instead destroyed her own family.

"I'm very sorry for everything that happened but I hope that no one goes through what I have gone through", she said through a translator just before being sentenced.

Marina and Kevin Krim left the courtroom before the sentence was read.

"Get me out of here". Because I want to talk about all our kids.

Ortega's lawyers had failed to convince the jury she was not guilty by reason of insanity.

Over the eight-week trial, jurors were subjected to stomach-churning photos and testimony spanning the children's final moments, the family's heartbreak and Ortega's alleged descent into madness.

Ortega wept as she spoke briefly - a rare show of emotion for her in the lengthy trial.

They testified that Ms. Ortega, a religious woman, had suffered from bouts of deep depression, and delusions and hallucinations since she was 16 in the Dominican Republic, but her illness had not been treated or diagnosed until after her arrest on murder charges. "Her plan that day was to kill the Krim children and to kill herself", Groves said in her opening statements. Lulu was stabbed more than 30 times, and Leo was stabbed five times.

She claimed she did not remember the attack and was possessed by the devil, but a psychologist told jurors she was depressed, but not mentally ill - and had not mentioned hallucinations at the time.

At trial, the DA's team said the nanny knew what she was doing. "She had aged a lot - like seven years in a few months".

Prosecutors say Ortega knew what she was doing and understood "each stab, each slash" as she slaughtered the youngsters.

Mr Krim, who now works at a start-up, and his wife use a Facebook page to post updates on their lives. The couple's two sons, "Felix and Linus, born after the murders, never got the chance to meet Lulu and Leo".

In 2012, in the aftermath of the killings, the Krims founded the Lulu & Leo Fund, which supports creativity in schools.
