University Of California Workers Go On Strike Over Pay Inequalities

The "green machine" made the move after a year's worth of stymied contract negotiations.

UCLA Health said in a statement it has retained health care professionals and has contingency plans to address patient needs during the strike. Also, it states, UC's black workforce has declined by 37 percent since 1996, and black workers are now more likely to work for low-wage outsourcing companies under contract at UC for a fraction of the wages earned by direct UC employees performing comparable jobs. Members of the union include service and maintenance workers from all ten UC campuses, ranging from hospital workers to hospitality career staff.

A spokesman for the union told the AP that pay inequality for the workers has been driven by the university "actively seeking to hire contract workers". They also claim that female and minority service and patient care workers make significantly less than their white male counterparts. "They won't even say the words inequality and outsourcing". What ends up happening is we just end up running up the tally, you know, it's an unfortunate cost; we try not to have to spend the money in the first place, and then it just adds up, and at the end, there's a bill, " Telliano said. We provided those names and numbers to labor relations.

The strike got off to a rocky start Monday at UCLA, where a motorist apparently got impatient and tried to drive through the picketers crossing a street.

Michelle Castillo, a medical office services coordinator at the UC Davis Cancer Center, said she arrived at 6 a.m.to participate in the strike. Back in October 2016, Dr. Howard Federoff, former CEO of UC Irvine Health, began overseeing a heavy layoff of 175 staffers deemed an "operational transformation " at the medical center. Both men clutched a sign that read "AFSCME 3299 On Strike Secure Future For All". Meanwhile, the union reports shortages in nursing, food and environmental services workers. "A disruptive demonstration will change neither UC's economic situation nor the university's position on AFSCME's unreasonable demands".

Alfonso Ramos attended the protest at UC Irvine Medical Center in Orange with his 1-year-old daughter, Violette. "Some were completed last week; most have been delayed into the coming weeks".

Last month, the union voted to go on strike and will be joined by members from the California Nurses Association and the University Professional and Technical Employees Communication Workers of America Local 9199 later this week.

It's been weeks since the UC has come to the bargaining table with AFSCME. Three of the striking workers were treated for minor injuries, according to CBS Los Angeles.
