Trying to Get Pregnant? Eating Fast Food May Delay Conception, Study Says

For instance, the researchers found intake of green leafy vegetables or fish did not have any impact on the timing of pregnancy.

The study participants - who were 28 years old on average and recruited from Adelaide, Australia; Auckland, New Zealand; Cork, Ireland; and Leeds, London, and Manchester in the United Kingdom - were asked at about 15 weeks pregnant to recall foods they ate in the month prior to conception.

Although the women who partook in the study were already pregnant when the research began, midwives in charge of looking after the women conducted interviews regarding their diet in the month before they became pregnant, as well as how long it took them to conceive. In women, excess alcohol use, smoking, and extreme weight loss and gain are also risk factors for infertility, the CDC notes.

Experts say, women who want to get pregnant should follow a *healthy* diet and *limit* their trips to the drive through.

Although the study findings suggest that whole foods may help improve fertility, Roberts is interested in exploring whether a good-quality diet is necessary or if supplements can do the same.

Study first author Jessica Grieger, also from the University of Adelaide, said, "Our data show that frequent consumption of fast foods delays time to pregnancy".

These foods included burgers, pizza, fried chicken and chips that were takeouts or consumed at fast food outlets.

Woman who consumed fast food four or more times a weeks were less likely to get pregnant in a month when compared to women who ate fast food less often. The researchers excluded couples who received fertility treatment because of male infertility, and 94 percent of the women received no fertility treatments before conception.

Detailed answers given by almost 5600 women in the early phase of pregnancy focused on what they ate in the months preceeding conception.

Dr. Raj Mathur, secretary of the British Fertility Society, who was not involved in the study, said that the new study is useful "for clinicians and women who are looking to start trying to conceive".

The study did not take a look at the reasons why fast food doubles the risk factor for infertility. Essentially, fast food consumption might actually have been underreported, the researchers say.

"The specific dietary components of fast food and their relationship to fertility have not been studied in human pregnancies".

Nearly all the women conceived without fertility assistance.

The researchers are continuing their work and plan to identify particular dietary patterns, rather than individual food groups, that may be associated with how long it takes women to become pregnant. Egg cells are high in saturated fatty acids and it's possible a woman's diet affects the balance of these fat components, Grieger said.
