FDA announces recall of more than 206M eggs linked to salmonella outbreak

The US Food and Drug Administration has announced a recall of over 200 million eggs.

Rose Acre Farms voluntarily recalled the eggs so far in nine states that includes Colorado, Florida, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia.

Recalled eggs sold under multiple brand including Coburn Farms, Country Daybreak, Food Lion, Glenview, Great Value, Nelms, Sunshine Farms https://t.co/avbXxL1B05 Consumers with these eggs shouldn't eat them.

Most people recover from the illness last from four to seven days, but it may cause more serious health issues for children, elderly, or those who have weakened immune systems.

The FDA says anyone who bought the eggs should throw them away or return them to the place they were purchased. Symptoms include diarrhea, vomiting, dehydration, fever and abdominal cramps.

The recall of more than 206 million eggs prompts a question: What will happen to all those eggs?

The labeling on your carton can help identify at-risk eggs: Avoid cartons stamped with the plant number "P-1065" and with the Julian date range of "011" through "102" printed on either side of the carton or package. Because of the large volume of eggs coming from the farm, the affected eggs had wide distribution.

Eggs have been associated with food-borne illnesses in the past, as poultry can carry bacteria that could potentially contaminate the inside of eggs before shells are formed.

There have been 22 illnesses reported to date, according to the USFDA. Salmonella also affects the ovaries of perfectly healthy hens, transferring over to the egg by proxy. Twenty-two people on the East Coast have been sickened by the outbreak, but no deaths have been reported.

Salmonella is a bacteria that can cause infection in humans, localized in the intestinal tract and occasionally, though much more rarely, in the bloodstream. That means that even eggs that appear normal could have Salmonella lurking inside.
