Facebook facing class action suit over facial recognition tech

Yesterday, a judge in California ruled that in order for Tag Suggestions to work, Facebook has gathered biometric information without users' explicit consent.

Executives from Facebook will appear before an Oireachtas committee later today to consider the use of social media and its potential influence on previous and future elections and referenda.

India will join the league of other countries such as France, Italy, the Netherlands, Germany, Mexico, Indonesia, the Philippines and the United States, where Facebook has already been running similar initiatives.

The ruling adds to the privacy woes mounting against Facebook over recent weeks, following disclosures that the personal information of millions of users was harvested by political consultancy firm Cambridge Analytica.

The decision comes days after Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg faced intensive questioning by U.S. lawmakers over the company's collection and use of user data.

Facebook also faced criticism by the Indian government for the similar incident, which might have leaked the data of almost 5.62 lakh people in India.

"When you visit a site or app that uses our services, we receive information even if you're logged out or don't have a Facebook account", product management director David Baser said in a post on the social network's blog.

Helen Dixon, will also give evidence to the Committee on Communications, Climate Action and Environment.

The company also claimed that it has been able to reduce its distribution by 80% once a story is rated as false.

"We are beginning small and know it is important to learn from this test and listen to our community as we continue to update ways for people to understand what might be false news in their News Feed", it said.

Facebook will also send people and Page administrator's notifications if they try to share a story or have shared one in the past that has been determined to be false.
