England win netball gold at the Commonwealth Games in a dramatic final

From the boxing ring to the shooting range to the athletics arena, it was India shining on the penultimate day of the 21st Commonwealth Games where the country claimed its biggest single-day haul of the ongoing edition, ensnaring eight gold medals across five disciplines.

England finished the Commonwealth Games with a final medal tally of 136, including 45 gold, second in the table to Australia, while Wales won 36 with 10 golds and Scotland took 44 total medals, nine of them gold.

She described the win as the best day of her life.

It was the gold medal nobody expected England to win.

Victory in the final came after Jo Harten's last-second goal sealed their 56-55 semi-final win over Jamaica and coach Tracey Neville admitted the stress had got to her.

This was the first time since netball was introduced at the 1998 Games that the final did not feature both Australia and New Zealand. Winning goal in a Commonwealth Games Final.

Australia head coach Lisa Alexander was forced into four changes at the break and moved goal shooter Caitlin Bassett to the bench after she was dominated by England goal keeper Geva Mentor, playing in her fifth Games.

In hot conditions on the Gold Coast, the 25-year-old had a two-minute lead and looked set for gold but began weaving before falling over the kerb.

Sunday's impressive result comes ahead of the netball world cup which is being held in Liverpool next year, and in which Neville's team are sure to be favourites.
