Britain at United Nations says Syria strikes were 'right and legal'

A suspected poison gas attack in the suburbs of the Syrian capital, which killed more than 40 people, has drawn worldwide outrage and prompted the United States and its allies to consider a military strike on Syria.

"Syria indeed today represents the most serious threat to worldwide peace and security", the Secretary-General said in a briefing to the Security Council.

The two leaders condemned Saturday's airstrikes by the United States and its allies on Syria and agreed that it would hinder the process of a political settlement in the war-torn country, according to a Kremlin statement.

On Monday, US President Donald Trump threatened to take military action against Syrian authorities over the alleged use of chemical agents in the town of Douma near Damascus.

The destroyed Scientific Research Center is seen in Damascus, Syria, April 14, 2018.

The Western attack on Syria on Saturday will not have any impact on the Syrian army's resolve to press the fight against militants and restore control of the entire country, the Syrian foreign ministry said.

United Nations partner the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) has deployed a fact-finding mission to the area.

"We expect some contacts to be taking place between the sides".

French President Emmanuel Macron expressed his "deep concerns" over the deterioration of the situation in Syria in a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Moscow circulated a draft resolution that condemns the "aggression" against Syria and demands that the allies refrain from any further strikes. Russia, China and Bolivia supported the measure, while four members abstained and eight voted against - including the U.S., Britain and France.

(File pix) GMMF executive chairman and chief executive officer, Datuk Dr Nasharudin Mat Isa, in a statement, said more efforts should be made to seek peaceful resolutions to the conflict. "I would remind them that that charter was not designed in order to protect criminals".

"You are not only placing yourselves above global law, but you are trying to re-write worldwide law", Nebenzia said.

"It is hard to believe that it is in line with the principles and purposes of the [U.N.] Charter to use or condone the use of chemical weapons", Karen Pierce told council members.

"The Cold War is back - with a vengeance but with a difference", Guterres told the Security Council during a meeting requested by Russian Federation.
