The Blitzboks have yet to be tested at the Commonwealth Games after thrashing Papua New Guinea 52-0 in their second group match on Australia's Gold Coast on Saturday.

South Africa were quickly into their stride in the final match of the opening round, Justin Geduld scoring a try in each half as the BlitzBoks showed their ruthless side with a dominant 43-0 defeat of Malaysia, the nation which hosted the first Commonwealth Games to feature rugby back in 1998.

A huge sigh of relief could be felt around the Robina Stadium when Charlotte Caslick broke clear to score the match-winning try for crowd favourites Australia and keep their hopes alive of completing a unique treble of the winning the first Rugby World Cup Sevens, Olympic Games and Commonwealth Games titles.

The victor of that match will progress through to the semi-finals and the loser will be out of medal contention.

Meanwhile, New Zealand made it a gold medal double at the with a dominant 14-0 win over Fiji.

Landry also nailed the conversion to put her team ahead 7-0 in the early going.

Facing a ferociously partisan crowd in the women's final against Australia, Kelly Brazier's 60-metre dash deep into extra-time had given the New Zealand women a 17-12 victory. With four tries on the board by half-time, England continued to pile the pressure on their neighbours in the second half with Emily Scott and a brace from Amy Wilson-Hardy but then faced a nervous wait to see if it would be enough for a semi-final spot.

The ball bounced back off the post but fell fortuitously into Kurt Baker's hands, who booted the ball into touch to seal the gold medal for New Zealand.

"This is an extremely special result for our sevens teams and will go down as a great day in our sevens history".

Australia were awarded a penalty after the siren, but Cassie Staples - apparently thinking her side was up following Green's try - kicked the ball into touch.
