200 million eggs recalled due to salmonella risk

Over 200 million eggs have been recalled in the USA for fears of a possible outbreak of salmonella. The affected eggs came from a farm in Hyde County, North Carolina and reached nine states.

The eggs were packaged and sold under several brand names including, but not limited to, Country Daybreak, Food Lion, Sunshine Farms, Crystal Farms, and Great Value.

According to the FDA, 22 illnesses have been reported in connection with the eggs to date.

Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections, especially in children, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems.

"Healthy individuals infected with Salmonella Braenderup can experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain".

"Consumers with these eggs shouldn't eat them".

Consumers who have purchased shells eggs are being told to immediately stop using the eggs. The recall includes eggs sold in Florida.

The recall is the largest of eggs in the US since 2010, when more than 550 million eggs were recalled from two Iowa farms, according to the website Food Safety News.

In 2010, a salmonella outbreak led to the massive recall of more than 1 billion eggs from Iowa farms.

According to the Food and Drug Administration, twenty two illnesses have been reported to date. It is generally contracted from contaminated poultry, meat, eggs and water, and affects the intestinal tract. The agency inspected the farm, which produces 2.3 million eggs a day from 3 million laying hens.
