Make sure that you file your federal taxes on time.

This year, Tax Day falls on April 17.

To avoid becoming a victim of a tax scam, be aware of warning signs, such as more than one tax return filed with your Social Security number or records showing income from an employer you never worked for. "This means it can be challenging or unrealistic to only schedule payments or purchases around your tax refund every spring".

Students should be aware that truthful reporting of their income is highly encouraged, as you can be audited for "under-reporting", whether you are a student or not.

The agency has pushed for better service after being blasted for its poor record in the past - though IRS leaders say they do have to make choices between spending on better cybersecurity, combatting identity theft and improving customer relations. It can also be hard for student employees to prove such earnings.

"The overall bill seems more like a hodgepodge of items and less like a thoughtful set of comprehensive reforms to help the IRS become more effective as a tax administrator", said Mark Mazur, a former U.S. Treasury official and analyst at the Tax Policy Center, a nonpartisan think tank. They're scrambling to track down even basic information in a murky world where tokens are traded on multiple exchanges with limited recordkeeping.

"Operational measures, like the [level of service], can yield a hollow result because they are only indicative of efficiency, not taxpayer satisfaction with the way the IRS handles calls or provides information", she wrote in her annual report to Congress this year. The new code will hit taxpayers a fresh set of complex requirements, making next year potentially "the biggest test yet of the IRS' communication approach", researchers said.
