Russian court orders immediate nationwide ban on Telegram messaging app

Telegram CEO was furious after the brief court session. The FSB has said it needs access to some messages for security reasons, including countering terrorist activity. "Telegram will be more hard to shut as it's highly popular and offers users means to bypass blocking". It recently celebrated 200 million users, and is presently raising billions in what is being called the biggest initial coin offering so far. The messaging app was founded by the Russian entrepreneur Pavel Durov and his brother Nikolai.

The court turned down the request, and swiftly ordered Telegram's blocking. This is to happen with immediate effect. The decision can be appealed within 30 days.

As part of its services, Telegram allows its more than 200 million global users, including senior Russian government officials, to communicate via encrypted messages which can not be read by third parties. But according to the company, the way its messaging service is designed means that it can't access customers' encryption keys.

Last month, Telegram lost a bid before Russia's Supreme Court to block security agencies from getting access to users' data.

According to the FSB, Telegram was used extensively by "international terrorist organisations", and its encryption technology made it hard for the security agency to track their communications. Roskomnadzor's representatives also said it would restore Telegram service if the company began complying with FSB requests for data.

"At Telegram, we have the luxury of not caring about revenue streams or ad sales", Durov, a Russian who fled the country in 2014, wrote.

The company is registered in the Virgin Islands.

Russia took another step in its campaign against online privacy today, by banning the highly popular encrypted messaging app Telegram, which is owned by Russian entrepreneur Pavel Durov. The blockchain will also have a cryptocurrency which Telegram users can use.

Because Telegram is recognised as an operator of information dissemination in Russian Federation, the company is required to provide encryption keys to let the Federal Security Service read the correspondence of suspected terrorists. Naturally, the authorities didn't take much time to take legal steps against the company.
