'Bombs won't save lives' in Syria, opposition leader Corbyn tells May

President Trump spoke to the prime minister on Thursday evening, and the pair agreed that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad had "established a pattern of risky behaviour in relation to the use of chemical weapons".

Corbyn, a veteran anti-war campaigner, said he had written to May to ask her to publish in full the legal advice she had received prior to taking action.

"Bombs won't save lives or bring about peace", the Labour leader said in a withering statement about the strikes, which he labelled "legally questionable". "But the USA administration is giving alarmingly contradictory signals", he said.

Liberal Democrat leader Sir Vince Cable echoed Mr Corbyn in saying the decision to deploy missiles in Syria should have been decided by Parliament.

"Britain should press for an independent UN-led investigation of last weekend's horrific chemical weapons attack so that those responsible can be held to account". There must be urgent confirmation from the Prime Minister that there will be no further action and no change to the role of United Kingdom military in regards to Syria without a full parliamentary debate. The humanitarian priority must be to halt the killing on all sides. "There has to be a political negotiation", she said. "We must do everything we can, no matter how challenging, to bring that about".

It said they all agreed with her on "the importance of restoring the global norm that the use of chemical weapons is never acceptable".

It comes amid Western threats of retaliation and Russian warnings of the potential for "a unsafe escalation" in the area.

The Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) has sent a fact-finding mission team to Syria to start investigations on Saturday, a spokesperson said.

Speaking to reporters after a closed emergency meeting of the UN Security Council, Mr Nebenzia said Russian Federation was very concerned with "the unsafe escalation" of the situation and "aggressive policies" and preparations that some governments were making - a clear reference to the Trump administration and its allies.

In a tweet sent Wednesday morning, Trump warned that missiles would be coming "nice and new and "smart" on Syria, but in a later tweet insisted he "never said" an attack would take place.

He told broadcasters the use of chemical weapons was "appalling and disgusting".

The comments come after Theresa May won the backing of her Cabinet for military action against Syrian forces.

Then came the suspected chemical attack in Douma, followed by worldwide condemnation and threats of military action.

"Theresa May should have sought parliamentary approval, not trailed after".

"Air strikes by U.S. and United Kingdom forces have not resolved the situation in Syria in the past and I am not persuaded they will do so now", the Scottish First Minister said.
