Hanna Dickenson: Fake Cancer Scam Lands Woman in Jail

Hanna Dickenson: Fake Cancer Scam Lands Woman in Jail

The court heard that her parents, who run a farm near Swan Hill in Victoria's north-west, had received thousands of dollars from their friends as they were struggling financially.

A Melbourne woman who scammed more than $40,000 from her family friends after claiming she was dying of cancer has been jailed for three months.

Hanna Dickenson, then 19, convinced her parents she only had weeks to live and desperately needed money for a lifesaving treatment and for travel to New Zealand and Thailand for special procedures.

A judge called Dickenson's actions "despicable", reported BBC.

The court was told one person donated $7,750 to Dickenson after being discharged from hospital following his own cancer treatment.

Her parents gave her the money to fund said "treatment".

She has now pleaded guilty to seven counts of obtaining property by deception.

Those donations, a total of more than $30,000 that the London Times says came from three different sources, ended up instead funding Dickenson's party lifestyle, including foreign vacations, which one suspicious donor eventually found proof of on Facebook.

"Ms Dickenson has engaged in conduct that tears at the very heartstrings of human nature", he stated.

"People's conscious desire to assist has been touched. that's the social trust". "These are the people who have worked hard and dug into their own pockets".

Comparisons were made between Dickenson's crime and that of health blogger Belle Gibson, who was fined $410,000 past year after falsely claiming to have survived brain cancer.

Dickenson's attorney, Beverley Lindsay, had earlier urged the magistrate to not send her client to jail.

The court said in this case it pronounced the jail term to deter others from engaging in similar conduct.
