Democrats say no threats to Pruitt, urge oversight hearing on EPA spending

Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Scott Pruitt didn't turn over the federally required waivers that would allow him to fly first class for security purposes when he responded to a records request from Congress, Rep. Trey Gowdy said Wednesday. The cost of Pruitt's security detail, including salaries and travel, has been estimated at almost $3 million, according to The Associated Press.

Clearly irked over Pruitt's refusal to satisfy the committee's requests, Gowdy demanded the administrator "Provide the requested documents and information as soon as possible, but no later than April 25, 2018".

EPA's Intelligence Team asked the United States Secret Service to provide a "Direction of Interest Query" in February 2017 and again this February on potential threats against Pruitt, the senators write, and neither query returned any "reports of behaviors of interest directed toward EPA Administrator Pruitt".

Even when Pruitt have been to resign or be fired, Republicans have expressed concern about confirming a different given their slim Senate majority and the absence of Sen.

EPA's assistant inspector general for investigations, Patrick Sullivan, has told The Washington Post and other media that Pruitt has received a higher number of threats than his predecessors - some of them "very personal, ugly threats".

Senate Environment and Public Works Chairman John Barrasso of Wyoming said he will not hold oversight hearings to examine alleged ethical lapses by EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt, including on exorbitant spending on security.

Committee Democrats, led by Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Md., the ranking member of the panel, have requested Gowdy to subpoena the EPA for knowledge and preserve a listening to with Pruitt and prime EPA officers.
