Uganda's athletics star targets gold at 2018 Commonwealth Games

Malaysia's Muhammad Azroy Hazalwa Izhar Ahmad won gold after lifting a total of 261 kg (117 kg in snatch and 144 in clean and jerk) to further create a Commonwealth Games record.

At the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Scotland, Uganda won only one gold medal through Moses Kipsiro (10,000m), two other bronze medals in athletics and two bronze in boxing through Mike Sekabembe (Super heavyweight ) and Fazil Juma Kaggwa (light flyweight).

India's Gururaja Poojary finished second while Sri Lanka's Chaturanga Lakmal won the bronze medal. His attempt for higher weight, however, failed, but he successfully managed a good lift off his last chance.

He sealed victory with a best lift in the clean and jerk of 144kg, a kilogram less than Ibrahim's Games record from Manchester 2002. The 25-year-old Karnataka-born attempted 107kg in his first snatch before going for 111kg in his second. When I saw him I really wanted to take up wrestling.

Manueli Tulo of Fiji showed a lo of heart and loads of fighting spirit to take the fourth position with a total of 239 kilograms. "All my coaches have shaped me", he said.

Arthur qualified for the semi-finals of the men's 100 metres with a time of 56.52 seconds while Jackson qualified for the men's 50 metres butterfly with a time of 24.68 seconds.

Earlier, the Indian women's cycling team failed to qualify in the track 4,000 metre Team Pursuit event.
