Southampton turn to Hughes

Southampton turn to Hughes

Southampton have only won one of the last 17 games in the Premier League, and the hammer fell on coach Maurizio Pellegrino, leaving the club rudderless.

The former Wales worldwide has taken charge of 445 Premier League matches during his managerial career, but perhaps faces his biggest challenge yet if he takes the Saints job.

The 46-year-old arrived at St Mary's as the replacement for Claude Puel, who was sacked despite guiding Southampton to an eighth-place finish and the League Cup final.

As reported by The Scotsman, Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers' achievements in his first two seasons in Glasgow have lead to some strong interest from Premier League club Southampton.

Mark Hughes has been lined up as the prime candidate to replace Mauricio Pellegrino at Southampton, according to reports on Tuesday.

Information obtained by Pro Soccer Talk from a source close to the situation revealed that Southampton aim to have their new manager in charge before this weekend.

Southampton have sacked manager Mauricio Pellegrino, the Premier League club announced Monday.

Pellegrino was sacked last night after the Saints dropped to one point above the relegation zone and won only one of their last 17 Premier League games.

Hughes, 54, has been out of work since being axed by Stoke in January.

With no league games for just under three weeks, Southampton have the ideal opportunity for a new manager to implement his methods before the crunch period continues.

Southampton wish to get a new manager hired before their FA Cup quarter-final against Wigan, which will be played on Sunday, and Le Tissier joined talkSPORT to react to the sacking.

Hughes began his managerial career with his native Wales and he has also taken charge of Blackburn, Manchester City, Fulham and Queens Park Rangers.
