Watch 12 minutes of Star Wars: The Last Jedi's making-of documentary

This is all part of the cycle of oddities that've allowed the Star Wars universe to grow under Rian Johnson's guiding hand.

Audiences were introduced to the savage beauty of Skellig Michael, the legendary island off the coast of Kerry, in Star Wars: The Force Awakens when Rey tracked down the long-lost Luke Skywalker, portrayed by Mark Hamill. Johnson said that documentaries have always been magic to him because he is "baffled by how they can get such intimate moments with a camera sitting there".

Star Wars actor will attend the St Patrick's Day parade in Dublin on Saturday as an global guest of honour. The documentary will be included in The Last Jedi's home video release as a special feature.

"Myths are not made to sell action figures", he continues.

He says the story is honest because it has to be honest.

As you might expect, Hamill had plenty of jokes, saying he can refer to this latest movie as "The Last Paycheck". "It felt right to me".

Mark Hamill was yet another surprise guest at SXSW.

If there was one thing that The Last Jedi had going for it, it was that it set up a lot. It wasn't too long before social media spread his words like wildfire.

"Basically, we did a mix where there is no dialogue, no sound effects, no backgrounds - nothing but the score just playing at regular, flawless level", Johnson said. As it so happens, a slew of unused concept art has now surfaced online for Free Radical Design's nonexistent fourth numbered installment for the science fiction game franchise, with images depicting a Dark Luke Skywalker, a Dark Leia Organa, a Redeemed Darth Vader, and more. He added, "I wanted to get it off my chest and throw it all away!"

"When you get down to it, it's not Mark Hamill in a blockbuster film". Since filming STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS in County Kerry, Mark has been a great ambassador for Ireland and it is awesome to have someone of such universal - even galactic - acclaim in this new honorary role.

It was a very natural, human reaction, and credit to Johnson for taking that direction when he could have easily turned Luke into Hero of the Rebellion 2.0 - which, in turn, would have robbed The Last Jedi of its emotional core. The Force has given us another gift in the meantime, with Lucasfilm releasing the first twelve minutes of the behind the scenes documentary for The Last Jedi.
