Republicans, Democrats both think voters are deplorable

"Regardless of who wins the special House election in Pennsylvania on Tuesday, the Democratic candidate, Conor Lamb, has already accomplished something impressive by showing that his party ought to contest every election - no matter how daunting the odds", the Times's editorial board wrote.

For the weeks of February 4 and February 11, roughly two-thirds of the broadcast television ads from Saccone's campaign, the super PAC Congressional Leadership Fund and the National Republican Congressional Committee mentioned taxes, according to a POLITICO analysis of data from Advertising Analytics. He's tweeted for Saccone and twice campaigned for him. The Rick Saccone campaign was a joke. If the Republican candidate in the Pennsylvania race reflected moderate views relative to the traditional rhetoric of the right - that candidate would be a threat. Donald Trump Jr. attended the rally and spoke on behalf of candidate Rick Saccone.

Nervous Nellie Republicans can take some consolation in the fact that Democrats still have miles to go to recoup the 1,042 seats up and down the ballot that, by Fox News' count, they lost during the hopey-changey presidency of Barack Obama.

Talk about deplorable - the candidates, I mean, not the voters. They had anxious that Rep. Karen Handel, R-Ga., was on track to lose a special 2017 election in suburban Atlanta; her four-point victory went on to boost morale so much that she would hold pep talks for Republican candidates.

But the candidates themselves created a race that may not be easily duplicated around the country. "The people of Pittsburgh", he declared, "cannot be conned by this guy Lamb".

"I've talked to so many of these [people] on the left, and they have a hatred for our president", said Saccone.

Callaway voted for Trump in 2016 because, he said, he wanted change.

"We worked really hard for it and I think it paid off", he said.

On the ground, it's been a coalition of anti-Trump groups, many that sprouted after Trump's election and led by women, that have been the volunteer backbone of the Lamb campaign.

The Congressional Leadership Fund, a political action committee aligned with House Speaker Paul Ryan, at one point deviated from its Pelosi-bashing scripts to send Democratic voters mailers praising Lamb for opposing new gun restrictions. National and state GOP figures pointed to Saccone's lack of fundraising and campaign strategy has the source, and even President Trump acknowledged the tight race during a rally Saturday to boost Saccone. The seat has been in Republican hands for the past 15 years.

For some voters, that was enough.

Lehigh County Chief Clerk of Elections Tim Benyo said his office received numerous calls in the past week as voters checked if they were registered to vote.

Theresa Jacobs, a 51-year-old school bus driver from Boston, Pa., liked that Saccone had a record in Harrisburg she could look at. "I feel that he's done a great job as the legislator", she said. "But what I'm anxious about is when they expire".

"I think it's been a race, since day one, about candidate disparity", one Republican close to the race said.

"If he wins, or even if he just comes close, he is a model for Democrats in competitive Trump districts nationally".

But Conant said the combination of Democratic enthusiasm and a strong recruit could tip the scales against the GOP. The Pennsylvania Supreme Court redrew the state's congressional districts after it ruled the old map was unconstitutionally gerrymandered.

Voters in Pennsylvania's 18th Congressional District are heading to the polls in a neck-and-neck special election that's caught national attention. The new map would have four swing districts, eight that favor Republicans and six that favor Democrats.

But the area covered by the 18th district had been trending Republican for decades.
