Protestors Leave Thousands of Shoes at US Capitol

The 7,000 shoes in the "Monument for our Kids" installment represent every child that was killed by gunfire since the deadly shooting at Sandy Hook elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut, in 2012, according to Avaaz.

Donors to the shoe monument include actresses Susan Sarandon and Bette Midler, and talk show host Chelsea Handler.

The temporary memorial was on display from 8:30 a.m.to 2 p.m. on the southeast lawn of the U.S. Capitol across from the Library of Congress.

ABC reports the organization, Avaaz, collected the shoes over a two week period, and some of the shoes were donated by families who had themselves lost a child to gun violence.

Per the group's website, all of the shoes will be donated to Washington, D.C., area homeless shelters and charities after the memorial concludes.

The shoes are from family members of victims, as well as celebrities, and others from across the country. Organizer Emma Ruby-Sachs said she thinks it's a pivotal moment for the movement to end gun violence. In 2015, they lined up thousands of shoes in Paris in a protest for climate change action. Her daughter is taking part in an active shooter drill at school on Wednesday, a necessity that she described as a "terrifying reality".

The memorial comes the day before the scheduled national student walkout to protest gun violence following the Parkland, Fla. high school shooting last month that killed 17 people.

Students across the country will walk out of their classrooms for 17 minutes to commemorate the 17 victims who lost their lives in the February 14 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.

And, on March 24, there will be another large demonstration against gun violence.
