Iowa Senate leader resigns; video shows him kissing lobbyist

Hours after the video went live, Dix met with fellow Republican senators and emerged minutes later to issue a brief statement: "I resign my position as Iowa State Senator and Majority Leader effective at 2 p.m. today, March 12, 2018". Don Coram, a Montrose Republican, has requested in a bill that would provide grants to schools that want to buy radio technology that allows them to communicate more directly with emergency responders.

Earlier Monday, before Dix's resignation, Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds (R) told reporters that she was disappointed by the allegations and said she had planned to meet with him.

Republicans in the GOP-controlled chamber plan to elect a new majority leader on Wednesday.

It's unlikely Monday's resignation of a married state senate leader caught on camera kissing a lobbyist will prompt an investigation in the Iowa Senate. He had been in the Senate since 2011, and was elected as Republican leader in 2013.

Senator Charles Schneider, a Republican from West Des Moines, says he and his colleagues were surprised.

Dix had already been widely criticized by members of his own party for his handling of the sexual harassment problem in the Senate Republican caucus uncovered by a lawsuit brought by a former staffer.

'Because this involves Senator Dix and a lobbyist, there will be questions about the impact of this relationship on legislation, ' she said in a statement. The ex-employee filed a lawsuit several years ago that claimed she was sacked after reporting misconduct in the workplace that included the use of sexual language.

Dix has maintained the ex-staffer was sacked for poor performance.

Anderson asserted she was sacked in 2013 after complaining of a toxic work environment in the Senate. The ex-lawmaker released recommendations in January that included suggesting all employees at the state Capitol - including elected lawmakers, nonpartisan staff, lobbyists and the media - receive training "regarding what constitutes inappropriate behavior". He served in the Iowa House for 10 years, then left in 2006 for a failed congressional run.

Dix is married with three teenage children.

The Iowa Senate's Democratic minority pledged that it will get to the bottom of Dix's make out session, pointing out that it might have political consequences.
