'Black Panther' tops box office in Disney-dominant weekend

"She makes the most distant dreams and ideas a reality", he wrote.

A Wrinkle in Time is set for release on March 9th in the U.S. and on March 23rd in the United Kingdom and features a cast that includes Storm Reid, Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, Mindy Kaling, Chris Pine, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Zach Galifianakis, Levi Miller, Andre Holland and Deric McCabe. Movie critics praised the visual imagination of A Wrinkle in Time and its messages of diversity and empowerment.

Ava actually didn't go to film school and didn't pick up a camera until she was 32-years-young.

"When you think about having two films at the top of the box office, it's definitely a win all around", said Disney's worldwide theatrical distribution president Dave Hollis.

"Black Panther" director Ryan Coogler penned an essay for ESPN about his friend DuVernay in honor of her movie's opening.

That amount makes Black Panther the seventh highest grossing movie in North American box office history, also putting it ahead of Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight to make it the second-biggest superhero movie behind 2012's Marvel's The Avengers.

The opening of Aviron Pictures' "The Strangers: Prey at Night" led the rest of the pack in third with $10.4 million at 2,464 venues. Dropping 52% in attendance to $8.1 million, the film was knocked it into the #4 spot. Even without the $26.2 million grossed overseas, the family film is doing fairly well compared to its $50 million budget, and Sony might want to start considering its sequel options. The wide release of "Hidden Figures", starring Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer, and Janelle Monae, opened at no. 1 in January of the same year with $22.8 million. MGM's second weekend of "Death Wish" followed in seventh with $6.6 million at 2,882 sites to give the Bruce Willis reboot almost $24 million in 10 days.

The other half of the weekend's new releases didn't fare so well.

Check back later today for an updated report based on actual numbers, and then check back Thursday where Disney will be getting some competition from the new Tomb Raider movie.
