50 feared dead as Bangladesh passenger plane crash-lands at Kathmandu airport

Eyewitnesses said the plane crashed as it made a second approach towards the airport, bursting into flames after coming to a halt in a football pitch next to the runway.

Reports say the aircraft from US-Bangla, a Bangladeshi airline, had flown in from Dhaka and came off the runway at Tribhuvan International Airport, catching fire.

The US today offered its honest condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims who were killed in a plane crash at the Tribhuvan International Airport.

The authorities recovered 31 charred bodies from the debris of the plane while 18 others were declared dead in medical centers.

Although several people had been rescued from the burning wreckage of the Bombardier Q400 series aircraft, nine people were still unaccounted for, Mr Bhandari added.

The plane can carry more than 70 passengers and firefighters have been battling a blaze at the scene.

All 49 people on board were killed on February 12, 2009 when a Colgan Air flight from Newark Liberty International Airport to Buffalo Niagara International Airport, stalled and crashed into a house while preparing to land at the airport.

The Dhaka-based airline made its first worldwide flight in May 2016 to Kathmandu, and has since expanded with routes to South Asia, the Middle East and Southeast Asia. The two pilots and two cabin crew were Bangladeshi nationals.

Rescuers had to cut apart the mangled and burned wreckage of the upturned aircraft to pull people out, some of whom were buried under the scattered debris. All four crew members were from Bangladesh, officials said.

The Bombardier Dash 8 aircraft crashed at around 2.20 pm local time and immediately caught fire. Smoke could be seen rising from the airport.

Chettri said that moments after the plane received permission to land, the pilot said he wanted to go in a northern direction.

"A three-minute conversation between the pilot and the air traffic control before the landing indicated that they sent wrong signal to the pilot", he told reporters in Dhaka. After some silence, the clearly alarmed ATC controller shouts, "I say again, turn...!". He did not respond when he was told that the alignment was not correct. The plane was carrying 71 passengers when it changed direction on the runway.

Montreal-based Bombardier is awaiting the causes of two deadly crashes over the past couple of days involving its commercial and business planes.

"The plane was going up down, right and left, up down.so I thought that was some air traffic only".

That something even more untoward had happened came to light with the eyewitness report of Arnico Panday, a climate scientist with a locally based global organisation.

Nepal has a poor air safety record.
