The recent SpaceX video has been made by Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan, co-producers for the HBO original Westworld series, and has been shown at the SWSW 2018 event.

Toward that end, Musk is shifting his focus to developing the BFR, which could stand for "Big Falcon Rocket" or "Big F**king Rocket".

"I'm close to AI and it scares the hell out of me", Musk said. The presentation included a stock audience-participation question: How many people would go? "I love dad jokes, I'm a dad!"

Musk told SXSW attendees that he thinks his company's interplanetary ship should be able to take short "up and down" flights by the first half of 2019.

More pressing to Mr Musk, and the investors that enable him, might be the backlog of orders for the Model 3, Tesla's "affordable" new vehicle. Musk, who is the founder of multiple companies, including SpaceX, Tesla and the Boring Company, is tackling some of the biggest challenges and technological advances of the modern age, like space travel and autonomous vehicles. He had to borrow money from friends to keep going. Instead he funnelled his own money, from the sale of PayPal, into the businesses.

Elon Musk is unquestionably the most interesting businessman in Silicon Valley - arguably the world - thanks to his nearly single-handed reignition of the space race.

"My point was AI is far more risky than nukes. So why do we have no regulatory oversight?"

It's important to make sure the dawn of AI is one that's symbiotic with humanity.

However, even coming up with the safety parameters would present all sorts of insidious and unexpected risks, Musk said.

During the Q&A, Musk also expressed his fear of artificial intelligence, or AI.

Musk proposed that digital intelligence should instead be directed to maximise "the freedom of action of humanity".

Pointing to AlphaGo and its predecessor AlphaGo Zero, Musk said AI is capable of vastly more than anyone knows, and said the rate of improvement is also exponential.

"Those experts who think AI is not progressing: look at things like Go", Musk said.
