Israel's Netanyahu to invite Trump to open Jerusalem embassy in May

Guatemalan President Morales invited Prime Minister Netanyahu to visit his country. "His courageous decision has encouraged us to do what is right", President Jimmy Morales said at a Washington conference on Sunday. Morales is known to be an evangelical Christian and strong supporter of Israel.

"As a sovereign decision, we recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel", Morales said.

Guatemala moved its embassy to Tel Aviv after the UN Security Council in 1980 called on Guatemala and other countries with their embassies in Jerusalem to withdraw.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met with Guatemala's President Jimmy Morales Sunday afternoon at Blair House in Washington DC in a "warm" encounter that saw the two men discussing deepening ties between their two nations. No other foreign embassies to Israel are now in the city, which hosts holy sites for Jews, Christians and Muslims.

Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales is an Evangelical Christian and strong supporter of Israel and is expected to move his country's embassy after the US moves theirs.

Some of the main discussion points include reducing U.S. aid for the Palestinian authority, breaking up the historic U.S. -Iran nuclear deal, reached under the Obama administration, and promoting bills and laws against the anti-occupation Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement, which has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.

The central American country's support may come as a surprise to some but the nation has been a long-time backer of Israel.

US President Donald Trump bucked decades of US foreign policy by formally recognizing Jerusalem as Israel's capital last December and setting in motion plans to move the US embassy there from Tel Aviv.
