Senate intelligence leaders say House GOP leaked senator's texts

A report alleging Republicans on the House Intelligence Committee leaked to the media Russian election meddling investigation texts by the Senate Intelligence Committee's top Democrat has been disputed by a key lawmaker.

Days later, however, the texts were published by Fox, disclosing only that it had obtained them "from a Republican source", the Times reported.

But in January, a Nunes staffer requested copies for the House panel, "a person familiar with the request who was not authorized to talk about it publicly" told the newspaper. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., the House Intelligence Committee's ranking member, said the panel's Republicans "could be the only Party member" of the leaks. Richard Burr rejected The New York Times' version of events in comments to CNN's Manu Raju: "Burr flatly denies report that his panel has concluded that Nunes/House Rs behind leak of Warner texts", Raju tweeted.

Strong, a spokeswoman for Mr. Ryan, released a statement after this article was published, saying, "The speaker heard the senators on their concerns and encouraged them to take them up directly with their counterparts".

The text messages were published February 8 by Fox News, and showed Warner texting with a lobbyist for a Russian oligarch in an attempt to gain access to former British MI6 agent Christopher Steele.

The texts were first leaked to Fox News at the beginning of February, but the exchange took place between February and May of previous year and includes several dozen messages.

The Fox News story was published barely a week after Trump approved the public release of a memo, written by Republicans on Nunes' panel, which charged that the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Justice Department had engaged in various "abuses" in their efforts to secure and repeatedly extend a warrant to surveil a former Trump campaign adviser. Mark Warner and a US lawyer with ties to Russia, The New York Times disclosed Thursday.

After the Fox News report came out, Republicans and Democrats on the Senate committee dismissed it as sensational. Sen.

Instead, Nunes spokesman Jack Langer attacked the Times for writing about it in the first place.

In a joint statement, Burr and Warner "acknowledged the meeting with Ryan", the Times reports. "I'm not sure if this coverage could possibly get more absurd".

One of the more hard aspects of the Trump/Russia investigation has been the Senate running a relatively bipartisan effort, yet the House committee has been actively squabbling as "recused" committee head Devin Nunes keeps trying to release memos and generally obsfucate investigations into whether Russia attempted to influence the election and if so, why.
