Trump admin wants to cut cleanup funds for iconic bodies of water

The GLRI is an inter-agency program created to address the most significant problems in the Great Lakes, and works to protect, restore, and maintain the Great Lakes ecosystem.

President Trump wants to turn off the spigot on the federal cleanup efforts at numerous nation's most iconic waterways, drawing a torrent of criticism from environmentalists.

President Trump's announcement on Monday of his new budget and his 1.5 trillion-dollar infrastructure proposal is not exactly being met by cheers from the environmental community in the Great Lakes Region. That's down from $167 million past year.

Trump's budget would give it $30 million.

Environmental Protection Agency money for Lake Champlain and other waterways across the country would be eliminated, with a plan to have the EPA "encourage state, tribal and local entities to continue making progress". The President's 2019 proposed budget includes massive cuts in funding the GLRI, from $298 million all the way down to $3o million. Members of Congress opted to fully fund the program for 2018.

The coalition also criticized the administration's proposed "infrastructure" plan saying it actually makes less money available for key projects that protect human and environmental health.

Ambs says, "The Trump Administration missed a major opportunity to help communities restore their water infrastructure". The Republican-led U.S. House Appropriations Committee previous year squelched Trump's attempted cuts for 2018 and fully funded the initiative, which enjoys wide bipartisan support and which funds water quality oversight, agricultural runoff mitigation, wildlife habitat preservation and more. And, the Trump plan guts clean water protections that every American depends on for clean, safe drinking water. The health and future of the Great Lakes, the largest collection of freshwater in the world, has never been more important and the GLRI targets long-term solutions for the Great Lakes ecosystem. It works to combat threats to the Great Lakes, such as invasive species or loss of habitats. "Just like previous year, I will fight alongside colleagues on both sides of the aisle to promote, strengthen, and preserve our Great Lakes".
